Becoming a dental professional was not something I had ever considered. As I grew up in Taipei, Taiwan, my childhood was filled with many terrible dental experiences: painful procedures and mean dentists when I had toothaches. When our family moved to Anchorage, Alaska and Toronto, Canada, my parents started to understand the importance of regular preventive dental care.
My dental experiences got better, however, I was still apprehensive and anxious about dental visits. It was one eventful day while playing pick-up basketball in college, my front tooth got knocked out partially, panic ensued. I didn’t want to lose my front tooth! My family dentist was able to see me and with his calming and gentle demeanor, he reassured me that I will be ok and saved my tooth! I was very grateful and this incident inspired me to be a dentist.
I am sure there are many people who have had the same or worse experiences like me with dentists. If I could provide a calming and gentle approach to make people feel comfortable and relaxed receiving dental care, I would make a big difference in my patients’ lives!
My education took me to University of Southern California(USC) in Los Angeles. At USC, I was able to learn from world-renowned professors and the importance of combining the traditional methods with modern technology to enhance treatment outcome and patient comfort. I was involved in the first tele-dentistry project with Childrens’ Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) and USC’s mobile childrens’ clinic to serve rural areas throughout California. After graduation, in addition to working in private practice, I also worked at USC, UCLA, and CHLA in different capacities as a clinical instructor and a researcher. I realized where I enjoyed the most in the dental profession: as a general and family dentist!
It has really been a joy taking care of generations of family in our office. I provide a humanistic approach with empathetic understanding of patients’ possible anxiety, I have been there before! Calming chair-side manner and gentle hands are crucial to patients of any age-from children to adults to seniors. This will ensure everyone getting continuous adequate care and coming to the dentist would be less stressful and could be enjoyable! I believe in partnering with our patients to understand their dental needs and in turn improve their overall health!
Technology and dentistry are continuously evolving. I stay on top of the current trends by participating in dental seminars, conferences and reading pertinent journals. Ultimately, this helps tremendously with my commitment to provide excellent patient care.
I have gained a deep appreciation for the sun and blue sky after living in California and Arizona! I take advantage of the beautiful weather here by playing tennis, swimming and participating in other outdoor activities. One of my hobbies is trying to stay on top of most collegiate and professional sports. I try to give back to the community when I can by donating time or resources to local organizations. Traveling around the world and learning about different cultures has always been a passion of mine; it expands my horizon and makes me more grateful for what I have and what I could still contribute to this society!
